Subject: Computer Music bibliography

There is a bibliography on synthesizers, midi, computer and electronic
music that I have collected from various sources. I have tried to bring
some structure into it, but not all books will fit into a single subject.
NOTE: I haven't read these books, and the comments are from other people.

The latest version of this file can be obtained by ftp from ftp.cs.ruu.nl
[131.211.80.17] in pub/MIDI/DOC/bibliography or by mail from
mail-server@cs.ruu.nl (send a message with HELP in the body). From the
mail-server the filename without pub/ should be used.
The latest monthly version is also available in the various news.answers
archives around the world, in music/midi/bibliography.

I haven't used the MOD player yet but I have used the MIDAS drivers. I
assume that you have to have the drivers installed in Windoze in order
for the MOD player to work since the drivers came out before the MOD
player did.....

Just a guess......

What's the name of the MOD player? Is it on EPAS?

MIDAS works great for me. Did you run the setup program? Once you have
done that you can simply use Media Player or any other MCI device to play
 MOD or .S3M files.

Note also that it can only play up to 8-voice files. Any files with more
than that will give an error on the MCI device. Also, some files with
the .MOD or .S3M extension are actually other formats which MIDAS cannot
handle.

What actual problems are you having?

I think that writing it would be very easy. The trouble is that loading
a patch (at least if you use the MidiOutCachePatches windows call)
causes a lengthy pause, and may well also turn all notes off.
I'm not sure whether this is intrinsic to the way a patch is
loaded onto the GUS (presumably using DMA, but I know little
about this), or whether it is just the behaviour of the GUS Windows
driver.

I have also never been sure whether MidiOutCachePatches reloads
the entire patch set, or whether there is a way of just adding
one patch to the current set.

At some point, the GUS memory will fill up, and the software would
have to take some decision about which patch to unload to make
space.

I once wrote a little program which just read MIDI input from my
(music) keyboard and fed it to the GUS, caching patches according
to any program change received. This wasn't too bad for just
playing from a keyboard, but the pause would be unacceptable in
the middle of a .MID.

to the person asking about midas. The Ultrasound option is always grayed
out (no idea why). What it does is plays the MOD file at an _extremely
low_ volume level. I've only once gotten it to come up by resetting the
gus mixer. But as of yet have not been able to replicate the incident.
maybe we should ask the author?

Yes, I do. When You go to the Media Player in Windows, select the
Device/Midas MCI Player, and a setup screen should pop up. If that doesn't
work, double-click on a MOD to bring up the Media Player, than select
Device/Configure, and the same setup screen should come up. Over here all You
have to do is to select Gravis UltraSound and voila!

But I suppose You have a more serious problem with it, so please contact me in
email if that's the case.

BTW, I think WinMIDAS is fantastic with native GUS support. Around 2 months
ago I was told by the author that they are working on full module (S3M, ULT,
FAR, MTM, etc.) support. That would be awesome! And on top of all this,
WinMIDAS lets 2 GUS-channels free for digital stuff (like WAV!), so I don't
loose any system sounds! (Unlike under other MOD-players that utilize the
2 standard Windows digital-channels - except MODus.)

It would greatly help if you explained what you tried and what the result
was. I simply installed the driver and started playing mods with the Media
Player.
